Song for the Captive Heart
I was sitting around pondering the differences and similarities in the tone between the old and new testaments. As I prayed, the Lord brought my mind vividly to the story of Rahab, the prostitute whose entire family was saved by faith and a red cord hung in a window. (Joshua 2-6, Hebrews 11:31)
The name “Rahab” refers to a terrifying mythical sea monster.
As I pondered what kind of family names their baby girl after a monster, the following song of redemption was born.
I called it Trembles, and if you or someone you know has ever been bound by walls too tall and thick to escape, I hope it will be a blessing to you… a reminder that Jesus sees you. And He would destroy a whole city, or His own body on a cross, to get you out.
Here are the lyrics… recording coming soon, when I open my new subscriber listening library. 🎧
Trembles
As a little girl she’d come home
And wait a moment at the door
Never knowing what she’d find there
An empty bottle or a sword
And she told herself that someday
Things would be different in her home
But every road leads to the same place
On the streets of Jericho.
So she trembles, trembles
For her future and her past.
She trembles, trembles
For these walls that have held her fast.
Sometimes she wants to run away—
But she would never know the way.
So she trembles, trembles.
As a woman she knows all the boys
Who come around lookin’ for a friend
But these two strangers know the one God
Who sees her beginning and her end
And they tell her that a red chord
Scarlet as the blood of a lamb
If placed outside in a window high up on her wall
Will tell their God she wants to live.
So she trembles, trembles
For her future and her past.
She trembles, trembles
For these walls that have held her fast.
Sometimes she wants to run away—
Maybe these men know the way.
So she trembles, trembles.
And Rahab, named for a monster haunting the ocean, named for pride
Gathered her broken family and waited with the red cord outside.
And they tremble, tremble
For the future and the past
They tremble, tremble
For these walls that have held them fast
Sometimes they wanted to run away
But they never knew the way
So they tremble, tremble…
And the walls came a-tumbling down.
